COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The local Salvation Army faces a potential $80,000 shortfall that may force cuts to free meals and Senior Care Day programs for seniors and families in need. Tim Nauta expects donations to increase in the coming weeks to help keep these community services running.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elkhart Schools released a consolidation plan on Feb. 10 to reassign students from Hawthorne, Bristol, Osolo, Woodland and Mary Beck while potentially cutting 36 certified staff. The Teachers Association said affected teachers will see openings by end of February + placements are expected by end of March.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana House Ways and Means committee approved Senate Bill 27 on Thursday morning, a unanimous vote that sets up financing for a new stadium near Wolf Lake in Hammond. The bill moves to full House consideration as the Chicago Bears express interest in the project.  16 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • We Make Indiana held a meeting Thursday night to plan next steps on funding and support systems for better mental health care, and local officials committed to pursue these improvements. Community members said the gathering helped restore hope and improve visibility for needed services.  WSBT
