COMMUNITY NEWS

  • La Casa de Amistad received a $500K grant from the GiveAF Foundation to renovate its facility and expand immigration legal services in the community. The award will boost local resources and support families in need.  16 News Now
  • Local businesses began a month-long March Meal Madness challenge organized by Cultivate Food Rescue to cut food waste and pack meals for families. The contest started yesterday (Tuesday, Mar. 3) and will help support food rescue efforts in the community.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several local restaurants, including LaSalle grill and Hooters, closed in recent months as tight margins affected the food business. Business leaders remain optimistic as new venues open around downtown and the east bank, building on rising visitation and fresh development.  WSBT
  • NIPSCO announced it will offer temporary relief through the end of March by waiving late fees, pausing disconnections, and reducing reconnection deposits for customers facing high winter energy bills.   • Drivers in Elkhart are noticing rising pump prices as national averages climb to $3.10; experts warn prices may jump another 15-30 cents within the next week due to global tensions in Iran affecting oil supplies & increased shipping delays while diesel costs may also rise later.  WSBT
  • Gas prices in Michiana have risen from $2.77 to about $3.00 per gallon, with some stations reaching $3.29 today — AAA says seasonal blend shifts and refinery maintenance are pushing costs higher. Elkhart drivers could see further increases as market adjustments continue.  16 News Now

  • A technology issue with the College Board has delayed SAT tests for many juniors statewide, but Elkhart Community Schools will hold the exam today.  WSBT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the county board tabled Amazon's request to extend its permit to pump 35 million gallons of water per day near New Carlisle — a move that raised concerns among local farmers about fields and drinking water.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials reported a rise in bird flu cases in Elkhart, LaGrange, and Noble counties, noting six cases locally since Christmas. They advised farmers to use dedicated barn gear (including separate boots and tools) and to monitor their birds to curb further spread.  WSBT
