  • United Way of St Joseph County ended its 2024 Fall Grant Cycle—distributing $350,000 to 17 programs from 62 applications—to support education, health, economic mobility, and safety net services across the county.  ABC 57
  • Elkhart community groups will hold the second annual Speak Your Truth rally this weekend at Tolson Community Center from 12–4 to mark three years since the tragic death of 12-year-old Rio Allred. Local organizers and students will share personal stories and push for changes in school safety and bullying definitions.  ABC 57

  • Early Wednesday, 19-year-old Dontae Quinones lost control of his 2014 Ford Fusion on C.R. 9 in Elkhart County—driving through two residential yards before colliding with a tree where he died from head and internal injuries.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • Epic Dance Studios hosted its annual Fundraiser Gala at The Lerner Theater in Elkhart Thursday evening with the theme Dancing thru the Decades as guests dressed in historic attire, ate dinner, and bid in a silent auction—this event raises funds to provide over $27,000 in need-based scholarships and $15,000 for outreach programs for after-school services and students with special needs.  ABC 57

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday during Indiana’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week, local officials explain the two types of flooding—areal flooding from steady rains and flash flooding from heavy downpours—and urge residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground when warnings are issued. They also stress that flooded roads are dangerous and advise drivers not to enter them.  WSBT

  • A 90-day pause on refugee resettlement has left 57 families with booked flights in limbo as Catholic Charities says many may have to return to refugee camps while local help programs face funding risks due to borrowed money, and President Trump will review a report to decide if and when resettlement can resume.  WSBT
