BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Forever 21 clothing store at University Park Mall in Mishawaka is set to close after filing for bankruptcy again, with liquidation sales now offering 40—60% off on most items. The company cited increased competition from foreign fast fashion retailers and is looking to find a buyer for some or all of its assets.  16 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded on March 14 at 11:05 p.m. to the 21000 block of C.R. 45 when a 2010 Mazda 3S driven by Vicente Salazar Sanchez (of Goshen) veered off the road, struck and destroyed a utility pole, rolled several times before coming to a stop, and after showing signs of impairment he was taken to the hospital for head pain and arrested for OWI and driving without a license pending blood test results.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elkhart City Council is considering raising water rates for residents for the first time in 15 years—an increase approved with a slight reduction by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that would move local rates to around the state average while funding needed maintenance and meeting federal mandates. Public comments and a vote on the measure are scheduled at the first meeting of April.  ABC 57
  • Elkhart officials are moving ahead with a nearly $9 million replacement for Fire Station #6, if safety concerns at the proposed Ada Drive site are resolved—Councilman Aaron Mishler supports the project for improved emergency response while Councilman David Henke questions its safety due to the site’s proximity to an EPA-designated superfund. The ordinance will be open for public comment and voted on in the first meeting of April.  ABC 57
  • The Town of Middlebury announced that construction on the U.S. 20 bridge over C.R. 20 will begin March 24—motorists should expect delays due to lane restrictions in both directions. Officials explained that the ramp from U.S. 33 to westbound U.S. 20 will be closed from mid-April to early June—weather conditions may change the schedule.  ABC 57

HEALTH NEWS

  • Elkhart Clinic reopened to patients Monday morning after nearly two months of closure when a gas-based vapor was detected entering through cracks in the basement walls—clinic officials installed a new vapor detection system and are sealing the cracks while guiding patients to alternative locations.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bethel Pilots and Grace Lancers advanced to the NAIA Round of 16 after wins over Peru State, Morningside, Carolina, and Pikeville—now they will face LSU Alexandria on Friday at 6 p.m. EDT and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Thursday at 4 p.m. EDT in Kansas City—.  16 News Now
