GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials in Elkhart introduced a bill that will require all landlords to register and have routine inspections to meet minimum safety standards. The proposal, backed by Mayor Rod Roberson, moved to a second and third reading Monday night—an incentive offering a 50% discount on initial inspections is planned—while details on the program's timeline remain unknown. - ➤ Town officials in Middlebury announced that lane modifications and road closures will begin today on the south side of U.S. 20 between Spring Valley Drive and Heritage Drive — the water main repair has led to the closure of Heritage Drive and motorists are advised to use Spring Valley Drive — and the work is expected to last until Wednesday. - ➤ Elkhart Common Council approved nearly $9 million for a new fire station to replace the old station on Bristol Street and Osolo Road by moving it to a site on Ada Drive south of County Road 6. City officials disproved water contamination concerns and plan to break ground in the coming weeks—completion is scheduled for next spring. WSBT
