COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Goodwill Industries of Michiana’s Veterans Resource Network will host six military veteran Stand Down events across Northern Indiana — providing food, medical care and mental health support to homeless, at-risk and unemployed veterans and their families. The events will run from May 17 in Kosciusko County to October 25 in Marshall County with additional stops in Elkhart, LaPorte, Porter and St. Joseph counties.  16 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Elkhart police arrested Darrius Dillon, Anthony Givens, Selena Colon and Maria Willis in connection with a drug investigation—more than 350 grams of synthetic marijuana were seized from an apartment on West High Street earlier this week.  WSBT
  • Two South Bend men were arrested on Wednesday in Elkhart when police responded just after 7 a.m. to a burglary in progress at the former C-T-S building on Beardsley Avenue—41-year-old Matthew Shepard, who was hiding in a nearby building and bitten by a police K9, and 45-year-old Joshua Hays, who resisted handcuffing and was found with a suspect box truck on Strong Avenue containing tools and copper wire, are now in jail awaiting formal charges.  WSBT

  • At Horizon Elementary, students and staff filled 300 duffle bags with vital items—hygiene kits, blankets, and books—for area foster children. Fourth grade teacher Julia Rulli started a yearlong project to promote community service.  16 News Now

  • Mark Evans, Agriculture, Natural Resources Educator, and Dan Carlson, Master Gardener at Purdue Extension in Elkhart told gardeners that soil conditions decide when to start planting this spring — following these guidelines is key to a good garden. Morgan Carr-Markell from Saint Mary’s College said that bees will emerge soon — planting diverse flowers will help boost pollination.  ABC 57
  • Michiana Area Council of Governments held its 2025 Partners for Clean Air Awards Luncheon in Elkhart on Wednesday to honor local groups such as South Bend Bike Garage—Cultivate Food Rescue—The Tire Rack—and the City of Nappanee for their efforts in reducing emissions and saving energy. The awards recognized projects that contribute to cleaner air and a sustainable future.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An analysis by the Indiana Library Federation found Senate Bill 1 could reduce public library funding by over $12 million in 2026 and nearly $17 million by 2028—libraries from St. Joe County to Goshen worry the cuts may derail key projects and a 10-year plan. South Bend Mayor James Mueller expressed concern today that the bill will force the city to make difficult budget choices as officials plan next steps—local leaders now consider how to adjust spending amid uncertainty.  ABC 57
