  • Goshen Health is celebrating National Nurses Week by displaying over 1700 handwritten notes from local students at 40 locations—community members can add their own thanks on a virtual message board.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun spoke at the RV industry's 13th annual power breakfast at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart this morning and urged leaders to persevere amid challenges from tariffs and 570 layoffs — he recalled that past tough periods after 9/11 and the 2008—2009 crisis led to industry strength.  16 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A recent report shows that nearly 3 in 10 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced partner abuse that has seriously affected their lives. Local advocates at the Family Justice Center and Center for Positive Change process around (6,000 to 8,000 police reports) each year to offer resources such as a 40-week abuse intervention program (aiming to break the cycle of violence) in a state with high domestic violence rates.  WSBT

  • Elkhart Community Schools named Kennedy Boland from Riverview Elementary as Teacher of the Year—she has taught for 7 years and is known for encouraging students to become confident readers.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Braun spoke at the RV Power Breakfast on May 8th about challenges to economic growth, addressing property taxes and assessments with a simple algebra approach (multiplying the assessed value by a rate to cover costs) and noted that in five years two-thirds of a home's value will be exempt from taxation. This talk highlighted his view that economic recovery has followed past crises like 9/11, the automotive downturn, and the pandemic.  WSBT
  • Today the Elkhart Toll Plaza at Exit 92 is closed for upgrades as crews repair the pavement and install new technology. Both east and westbound traffic are being diverted to the Elkhart East Toll Plaza at Exit 96—work that will finish by Sunday.  16 News Now
  • Governor Braun addressed the 13th annual RV industry power breakfast in Elkhart this morning where he signed a new bill and discussed RV tariffs and property taxes in St. Joe County — recorded video messages from Yakym, Young, and Banks and remarks from Mayor Rod Robinson added further context.  ABC 57
