Good morning, Elkhart. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 21st of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local food banks saw a 13.5% rise in visitors and more than 2,500 new households seeking help as they brace for a proposed federal spending bill that will cut SNAP funding by nearly 30%. Advocates warn that reducing benefits by about $110 a month could deepen food hardship and strain donations + volunteer efforts in the region.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Phase 4 of the Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive Intersection Improvement Project begins today with work shifting to the southwest corner of the intersection; drivers will face one through lane and one left turn lane restrictions and must follow a detour (east on Ireland Road, south on Bremen Highway, then west on U.S. 20 Bypass to rejoin Ironwood Drive) as the project moves toward early July completion, weather permitting.  16 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health leaders from Trinity Health and Ascension held a news conference Tuesday to warn that proposed Medicaid cuts under the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' could reduce care for Hoosiers and strain local hospitals already struggling with low reimbursements (Medicaid covers 20% of our population and 3 out of 8 babies are on the program).  WSBT

  • City leaders celebrated the groundbreaking for the new 515 East Apartments this evening on East Street; the four-story building will provide 48 income-based units and community amenities—community room, kitchen, fitness center, dog park, and rooftop deck with views over the river and downtown. Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
