  • A car hauler caught on fire on the Indiana Toll Road near the Elkhart East exit — Exit 96, and authorities investigated the incident after it occurred yesterday.  16 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • WNDU is running a contest to give away a pair of tickets to the Elkhart Jazz Festival, which will take place from June 19 through June 22. Entries run until June 20 — one winner is chosen each weekday from June 16 and must be 18 or older and a local resident to claim a prize worth about $280.  16 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Recent college graduates in Indiana are facing record-high unemployment as studies report their rate is near 6%—about 2% above the national average. Notre Dame economics professor Kirk Doran said the trend began before the pandemic and that automation led companies to change hiring practices, forcing many grads to seek jobs in multiple industries.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Goshen Community Schools announced that long-time educator Carrie Garber will serve as West Goshen Elementary’s principal on July 21 after the Board of Trustees approved her appointment on Monday. She has spent 24 years with the district in roles such as teacher and principal — experience that strengthens her return to the school she calls home.  ABC 57

HEALTH NEWS

  • Preliminary data from the Indiana Department of Health showed the 2024 infant mortality rate dropped to 6.3 deaths per 1,000 live births from 6.6 last year—if confirmed, it would be the lowest rate since 1900. The department will release a full analysis of the data in the coming months.  16 News Now

  • The annual Elkhart Parade of Homes is underway with events running June 19 to 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. and June 21 to 22 from 1 to 8 p.m., featuring six new homes, a Hard Hat home open the first weekend only, one remodel and a Tiny Home built by Concord High School trades students—raising funds for local kids. Tickets cost $10 at the door or $8 online—with raffle tickets available at BAEC at 25428 County Road 20 for two playhouses built by 7th graders.  ABC 57
