ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A horse died after a buggy collided with a pickup truck in Elkhart County + officials are investigating the crash.  16 News Now
  • Elkhart County Sheriff's Office said that around 11 a.m. Tuesday a 2018 Honda Civic driven by 46-year-old Jason Showalter from Goshen disregarded a stop sign at C.R. 36 and C.R. 12 and pulled out in front of a 2019 Nissan Sentra driven by a 17-year-old boy near the intersection of C.R. 36 and C.R. 19, causing Showalter to be taken to hospital for abdominal and shoulder pain while the teen was cleared on scene; Showalter was cited for the violation.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • A petition asking the county prosecutor to reopen the criminal case against three former Jayco employees for killing two feral cats in a trash compactor has gathered nearly 20,000 signatures nationwide as of Wednesday and spurred local protests while prosecutor Vicki Becker said she would not change her decision based on public criticism—stating the dismissal was due to an exception in animal abuse laws.  ABC 57

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Elkhart Environmental Center will host the Pollinator Promenade on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its wildflower prairie that spans 4 acres, featuring a costume contest, a speed walking race, a scavenger hunt, kids' activities, food vendors, and booths by local groups.  16 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elkhart City Council approved two voluntary annexations Monday night to boost growth by adding about 200 acres in the northeast quadrant for future residential and business development—this move brings the RV Hall of Fame and Casey's Gas Station within city limits, and city officials noted that recent utility extensions paved the way for increased development in the area. City leaders expect new restaurants, hotels, and housing projects as the area continues to grow.  WSBT
  • Indiana Gov. Mike Braun signed 'Jake's Law' on Tuesday, which now requires every school to have a plan for heart emergencies and an automated external defibrillator at events + the law is named for Jake West, a teen who died of cardiac arrest on a school football field.  ABC 57
  • Elkhart expanded its boundaries after the city council approved two voluntary annexation ordinances Monday night. The first annexation adds two vacant parcels — one on Greenleaf Boulevard and one on Vernon Avenue for 19 single-family homes — and the second covers Elkhart East Areas C and E — including Casey’s gas station, the land north of it and the RV/MH Hall of Fame — to support future economic growth.  ABC 57

  • The Elkhart Clinic said it will close its Wakarusa location on July 18th due to a change in its growth plans — patients with existing appointments will be contacted to reschedule at the main clinic.  ABC 57
