  • After finding four urns filled with human ashes at a local garage sale, Nappanee resident Bailey Fiandt launched a search to locate the families of the departed—she already contacted a funeral home and called on the community for help.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • A Michigan man, 38-year-old Steven Zick, was arrested in Elkhart on July 15 after he ran a stop sign on his motorized bicycle and fled police, with officers later finding a backpack containing drugs+drug paraphernalia including a bloody syringe needle, and he is being held without bail on multiple drug and related charges ahead of a court date on October 1.  ABC 57
  • Vandals broke into the Portage Township Office and tore apart four air conditioning units to steal copper—resulting in an estimated 18,000 dollars in damage and noting two break-ins last week.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Goshen is pausing projects such as a new fire station and the rebuilding of Shanklin Pool as it prepares for a 38% revenue loss by 2028 due to Indiana Senate Bill 1 cutting property tax revenue. City officials are working with financial advisers to set the 2026 budget and focus on essential services like road work and public safety.  ABC 57
  • Officials in Goshen closed the recycling drop-off site at 802 N. Indiana Avenue on July 18 due to persistent illegal dumping that led to repeated violations — the city now reviews whether keeping the facility open can justify extra staffing and budget costs.  16 News Now
