CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police responded after 3:00 p.m. on Monday in Goshen when a 34-year-old man allegedly armed with weapons made threats during a nearly four-hour standoff—he exited the house voluntarily and was taken into custody. WSBT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ New Prairie United School Corporation announced that starting this school year, Olive Elementary students may leave campus during specials to attend optional weekly Bible classes offered off-campus at Olive Chapel (parental permission is required). The LifeWise program will release students for 45 minutes each week for this religious instruction. 16 News Now
- ➤ Indiana data shows that the college-going rate fell to 51.7% statewide (44.7% in Elkhart County) in 2023, a steep drop since 2008. Local and state leaders warn that low enrollment may hurt wages (weakening the local workforce) and call for more support for higher education. WSBT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The new Elkhart County Courthouse in Goshen is hosting guided tours that began Monday at 4 p.m. and will continue through Friday, Aug. 8—each tour lasts about an hour for up to 30 visitors. Groups of 10 or more must email commissioners to reserve a spot before the official opening on Sept. 5. 16 News Now
