EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Elkhart schools opened as staff at Cleveland Elementary readied classrooms for the new school year—ABC57's Giselle Valentin reported live.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita issued Civil Investigative Demands to Notre Dame and Butler seeking records on DEI practices to check for possible state law violations. The universities had not supplied the materials requested in May + their websites indicate policies that may treat people differently based on race.  ABC 57
  • Congressman Rudy Yakym discussed the One Big Beautiful Bill in Indiana's 2nd District, saying it offers tax relief for overtime workers and supports manufacturing families—he will tour 11 counties in August—to promote common sense Medicaid rules and strengthen job or volunteer opportunities. This visit highlights his effort to showcase pro-worker and pro-family policies across the district.  WSBT
  • Elkhart County will get a $180,000 refund for three A.I. body scanners that failed accuracy tests for courthouses+ the county will use metal detectors instead.  ABC 57
  • A small group gathered outside the Elkhart County Courthouse on August 14th to demand accountability from the DCS for failing to protect Justin—whose father and step-mother now face murder charges—arguing that repeated reports of concern were ignored.  WSBT
