COMMUNITY NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a head-on crash occurred on S.R. 120 east of C.R. 17 when a Ford Fusion left center and hit a Chevrolet Silverado—sending a 24-year-old man to South Bend Memorial Hospital and two older adults to Elkhart General Hospital for injuries.  ABC 57

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Larry Lippert—a co-founder of Lippert Components—died at 100, and the company said his vision and people-first leadership laid the foundation for its lasting legacy.  WSBT
  • Michiana PBS station laid off 25% of its workforce on August 20th, affecting many employees. The station has not yet provided details on the restructuring—leaving local workers uncertain about their future.  16 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Joseph Bailey—23 years old—was arrested and charged with failing to remain at the scene after he rear-ended a moped on C.R. 4 around 2:18 a.m. on Aug. 16, which caused the death of driver James Thoman and injured passenger David Hamilton, and his initial hearing is today.  ABC 57
  • Elkhart Police arrested three men after stopping a Buick LeSabre near 5th and Marion on Tuesday around 4:15 p.m.—officers detained driver Tommie Moreno, along with passengers Ian Alexander from Elkhart and Parrin Garner from Goshen, after detecting a marijuana odor, a missing seatbelt, multiple firearms, and synthetic marijuana; Alexander fled on foot before being caught.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Elkhart Fire Department told drivers to avoid the Botanical Center at 921 N. Main St. on Wednesday morning during a hazmat training exercise—a drill that simulated a chlorine leak—with teams from South Bend, Cleveland Township, Osolo Township, and Elkhart General Hospital. Officials said the realistic drill helped crews get ready for real emergencies.  ABC 57
