CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday an Elkhart officer spotted a stolen Honda CR-V near S. 11th Street and W. Indiana Avenue and chased it with lights and sirens—police later found the car parked on Compton Street with a firearm and marijuana, and 19-year-old Trevon Loston was arrested on Delaware Street for handgun possession, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and marijuana charges. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The River Bend Film Festival returns for its 22nd year in Goshen today with no overlapping show times so that movie lovers can see every independent film. Director of programming Jordon Hodges, who moved the event from South Bend to his hometown, will wrap up the festival with a party on Aug. 30—offering workshops and diverse film genres. ABC 57

- ➤ Local safety officials participated in a live train derailment exercise with hazardous materials in Argos—teams from northern Indiana tested response plans on Thursday and will focus on recovery efforts today. WSBT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Researchers in Middlebury are studying the Amish community to better understand type 1 diabetes risks and improve early treatments—nurse Ludmila Pichugena-Emerson and Dr. Dan Kragt at Dayspring Christian Healthcare are screening patients and offering monoclonal antibody shots to delay the disease. - ➤ Researchers in Middlebury are studying diabetes in the Amish community and have found that type 1 cases occur more often than in the general population—this work includes free antibody screening and an FDA-approved shot given to an eight-year-old patient to delay the disease. Nurse Ludmila Pichugena-Emerson and Dr. Dan Kragt at Dayspring Christian Healthcare will continue to support at-risk patients with low-cost treatments and care. WSBT
