ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Potawatomi Zoo will send its beloved rhino Masamba to a 10,000-acre conservation center in Ohio—where it will breed, marking its departure from the zoo.  16 News Now
  • Indiana reduction zones in urban areas such as South Bend, La Porte, Elkhart, Michigan City & Warsaw extend the hunting season and allow hunters to take up to 10 deer and a second antler deer to help manage high deer populations. Hunters must follow DNR safety procedures & local rules to balance wildlife numbers with community needs.  ABC 57
  • St. Joseph County approved an amendment to its Water Protection Plan aimed at tackling water contamination and boosting clean water access—county funds will be reallocated to study septic system concentrations while engineers begin a report on long-term solutions.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fulton County has only 12 lawyers for 20,000 residents as many older attorneys retire, leaving rural law firms with a legal desert. Officials are launching high school internship programs—part of recommendations from an Indiana Supreme Court report—to attract new legal talent.  WSBT
  • Gov. Braun answered Joshua Short’s question about Charlie Kirk’s murder—he said his attorney general was investigating comments made by educators regarding the killing.  16 News Now
  • The Elkhart County Sheriff’s office is still waiting on a check from the state department of corrections for a $1.3 million reimbursement for housing state inmates dating back to August 2024 — a new state budget bill now outlines a revised reimbursement process.  WSBT
  • An accessible pedestrian signal was installed in Elkhart thanks to the help of 12-year-old Willow Townsend—making navigation safer for visually impaired pedestrians.  16 News Now

  • Today, the Elkhart County Suicide Prevention Coalition hosted its Walking Together Remembrance Walk at Wellfield Botanic Gardens to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness as participants picked up color-coded beads in memory of lost loved ones—community members united to support mental health efforts.  16 News Now
