COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ADEC unveiled its new Outdoor Programming Space last Tuesday night in Elkhart, offering an ADA-compliant playground, basketball and multi-use pad, concrete walking path, sensory garden, and secure fencing for people with disabilities — the $850,000 project was funded entirely by donors and grant support.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Madison Tucker—a passenger on a motorcycle hit by a hit-and-run driver in Elkhart in July—thanked first responders who saved her life with a blood transfusion.  16 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Phoenix Performing Arts in Goshen will stage Disney's Freaky Friday musical this weekend, starting Friday. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday plus 3 p.m. on Sunday while tickets cost $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $15 for children.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph County legislators announced that county schools received over $876,000 for safety upgrades under the Secured School Safety Grant Program—funds will be used to support resource officers, equipment, and technology improvements. The grants will benefit schools including Elkhart Community Schools.  ABC 57
  • Operation Education will investigate chronic absenteeism at Washington High School in South Bend at 6 p.m. on WSBT 22—data shows more than 54% of students missed classes this school year and 85% live near poverty, which impacts their ability to attend.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 21, local patriotic groups, including Arsinoe Martin Circle #78 Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic and the William Tuffs Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, held the 10th Annual wreath-laying ceremony at the United States Constitution Monument in Island Park to honor the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution—featuring speeches, musical tributes, readings of all 27 amendments, and the ringing of a historic bell.  ABC 57
  • The old Elkhart County Courthouse in downtown Goshen is being renovated to house county offices such as commission meetings, IT, parks and space for city fire service—with renovations including updated restrooms, painting, new windows, and a new roof scheduled over the next 60 days. The old downtown courthouse will be demolished within the next year.  WSBT

  • Dr. Thalia Pachiyannakis, a Michiana OB-GYN, advised pregnant mothers on Tylenol safety amid reports linking acetaminophen to autism — she urged women to consult healthcare providers for guidance.  16 News Now
  • A White House announcement linking Tylenol use during pregnancy to autism sparked backlash from local doctors and autism advocates in Michiana—experts say the evidence does not prove a cause and advise consulting a physician before changing pain management routines. Local specialists stress that acetaminophen remains the safest option when used at the lowest effective dose—warners of a rise in unnecessary worry among parents.  ABC 57
