- ➤ Dismas House of Indiana is preparing to open its new Dismas Hub — a center for economic empowerment, family support and health resources — with a ribbon cutting and grand opening scheduled early next month. People can preview the hub at the Women’s Recovery Walk on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 16 News Now
- ➤ Today, Edison and Jefferson Middle Schools met in a football game to raise support for people fighting cancer—players held a moment of silence and a pink-out that raised $500 to fund breast cancer awareness efforts. Local coaches and community leaders said the event showed that the schools value care for those battling the disease. WSBT

- ➤ Indiana farmers celebrated today as Taiwan signed an intention to purchase $2 billion in corn (and $4 billion in soybeans) over the next four years, building on a nearly 50-year trade partnership. The agreement, signed by Indiana Soybean Alliance chairman Denise Scarborough and Indiana Secretary of Agriculture Micah Beckwith (both local farm leaders), will boost market access for the state's growers. - ➤ Ivy Tech South Bend and Elkhart partners with SlateUp to address Indiana's manufacturing talent shortage by connecting students with local employers—Vice Chancellor Amber Ruszkowski said the partnership will boost opportunities for future workers. ABC 57
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Dry conditions in the area increased outdoor fire risks as dry leaves, grass, and brush easily ignited from a single spark (fire marshal Ron Melser warned that fall conditions could lead to dangerous fires). Local officials and farmers reported that burn bans are enforced and urged residents to water down dry surfaces and call 911 if a fire starts. WSBT
- ➤ The Lilly Center’s lab confirmed that dangerous E. coli levels still persist in Cherry Creek, even after Winona Lake repaired a clogged line on Sept. 10. Follow-up samples on Sept. 15 showed the bacteria remain above EPA and IDEM safety limits — the water is still unsafe. ABC 57

- ➤ Cubs fans from Michiana, including some from Elkhart, traveled to Chicago Wednesday to watch the Cubs play the Padres in game two of the NL Wildcard series—excited after Tuesday’s playoff win that marked the team’s first postseason win since 2017. ABC 57
