COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Woodlawn Nature Center in Elkhart will celebrate its 60th anniversary on November 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by hosting free activities such as guided hikes, local food trucks and a proclamation ceremony at 12 p.m.—the event invites families to explore the trails and learn about year-round programs.  ABC 57
  • Middlebury Food Pantry raised over $70,000 during the 'Trapped in a Tower' fundraiser on Oct. 27+ local donors supported the event to aid food assistance efforts.  16 News Now
  • The Family Christian Development Center in Nappanee has faced severe financial challenges as donations fell sharply while service demands swelled, forcing it to cut back on eviction assistance. The non-profit, which has helped thousands for nearly 30 years, is planning Thanksgiving meal giveaways on November 18, 19 and 25—along with a food drive at Northwood High School—as it calls on local residents for help.  WSBT

  • Holy Cross College President Marco Clark will travel to Rome on Wednesday to attend a Catholic higher education conference and meet privately with Pope Leo—he is the only North American speaker chosen to share the college’s mission.  16 News Now

FINANCE NEWS

  • On Saturday night, a lottery ticket purchased at 7-Eleven on Toledo Road won $50,000 in the Powerball drawing but the winner has not yet claimed the prize — officials advise keeping the ticket safe. The winning ticket matched four numbers and the Powerball while no one hit the full jackpot, which has climbed to $358 million.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents at Rosedale High Rise Apartments raised concerns at a Housing Authority meeting last week about bedbugs that have troubled the building for months—some also noted problems with rodents. Housing officials said they will continue treatments and inspections until the issues are resolved.  WSBT
  • City workers will take the traffic signals at Portage and Cleveland Road out of service temporarily—crews will complete needed repairs and local drivers should use extra caution nearby.  16 News Now
  • Elkhart’s Redevelopment Department is applying for federal funds to clean up the historic Old Roundhouse Site in the Benham West area — the site of two demolished railroad roundhouses that was left contaminated by train tracks. City officials held a public meeting Monday to discuss the cleanup and possible plans for housing, stores or community resources.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bird flu was detected at a commercial egg-laying facility in LaGrange County where more than 20,000 birds were affected—other cases were found in both LaGrange and Elkhart counties. Health experts say the virus spreads through wild or migratory birds and dairy cattle.  WSBT
  • The Indiana Department of Health confirmed the season's first flu-related death. Officials urge everyone aged 6 months or older to get a flu vaccine, wash hands with warm, soapy water, and cover coughs — simple steps to slow the virus spread — as flu season continues through May.  WSBT
  • The Indiana Department of Health confirmed the season's first flu death and urged Hoosiers to get a flu shot to help stop the spread of the virus. Officials said the elderly + those with chronic conditions are at higher risk and should take extra care as flu season runs from October through May.  16 News Now
